Exploring the verb grozit\u2019 \u2018threaten\u2019 and aspectually related verbs, we demonstrate that the three perfective near-synonyms pogrozit\u2019, prigrozit\u2019 and ugrozit\u2019 are semantically distinct, insofar as pogrozit\u2019 tends to be used about \u201cgestural threats\u201d, while prigrozit\u2019 and ugrozit\u2019 typically occur in \u201cverbal threats\u201d. Ugrozit\u2019 is shown to be marginal in Contemporary Standard Russian. We suggest that the two imperfective verbs grozit\u2019 and ugro\u017eat\u2019 are semantically distinct since they display different collocation patterns. With regard to diachrony, it is shown that ugrozit\u2019 was attested early, and is likely to have motivated the formation of the secondary imperfective ugro\u017eat\u2019. Ugrozit\u2019 was subsequently (nearly) outcompeted by prigrozit\u2019 and pogrozit\u2019, which eventually developed affinities for verbal vs. gestural threats.
